On August 14, former president Donald Trump was hit with a fourth set of criminal charges by a Georgia grand jury. The indictment accuses the former president of efforts to overturn the 2020 election results after his loss to President Joe Biden. The indictment includes 41 criminal counts and 19 defendants, all of which were charged with racketeering. The crimes of which the former president is accused of include falsely testifying to lawmakers and urging state officials to violate their oaths of office by altering the election results. This new indictment means the former president is now facing 91 charges in total.
Many of the co-defendants are facing charges connected to the breach of a voting system in Coffee County, Georgia after the 2020 election. These charges include computer trespassing, perjury, conspiracy to commit election fraud, and conspiracy to commit computer theft.
Despite the former president’s attempt to overturn the Georgia election results, CNBC reported that even successfully overturning the results in Georgia would not have won Trump the election. As Biden held a margin of 306 electoral votes to Trump’s 232, overturning the Georgia results would still have resulted in Trump falling 22 electoral votes short of of the 270 needed to take the White House. This means that two other states would have needed their results overturned. However, the indictment makes clear that Trump’s efforts to reverse his 2020 loss were not confined to the state of Georgia. Special Counsel Jack Smith previously charged the former president with conspiracy to defraud the U.S. by organizing fraudulent electors in Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
As we learn more regarding Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election, one thing has been made clear, Republicans do not believe that every vote matters. Republicans do not believe in our freedom to choose who governs us. The Republican Party is one to question the integrity of foreign governments who do not give voice to the people, yet repeatedly attempt to undermine the voice of Americans in every election. In 2023 and 2024, Rideshare2Vote will be working to ensure that Republicans continue to fail in their attempts to undermine voters by making voting more accessible throughout the country.
