Time to Vote out Senator Rubio in 2022

The 2016 election cycle had its fair share of horrific moments. As a lifelong Floridian, two stand out very prominently in my mind. The first was a comment made by Senator Marco Rubio during a debate between his then opponent for the seat, Patrick Murphy. When asked by the commentator about his position on abortion rights, Rubio went on to say that it did not matter if every single Floridian believed in the right to choose; he would always fight for it to be outlawed. While I found the comment grotesque, I truly thought that by admitting he would always put his own interests before the will of the people he is supposed to represent, he had just buried his campaign six feet under. I could not have been more wrong. The second horrifying moment came when election day was over, and Rubio had won.

Senator Rubio’s belief that his will should outweigh that of an entire state populace does not end at reproductive rights. According to a survey conducted by Quinnipiac University officials found that 96% of Floridians support required background checks for those looking to purchase a firearm, and 92% support making it illegal for anyone found guilty of stalking, domestic abuse, or other violent crimes. On the other hand, Rubio has a consistent A+ rating from the National Rifle Association (NRA). A Florida Climate Resilience Survey conducted by Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Environmental Studies found that 89% of Florida democrats believe that climate change is real. For Florida republicans, that number is 86%. Rubio will not budge from his anti-science stance on this matter, not even when much of his own base believes that he should.

So, what is it that prompts Senator Rubio to defy the wishes of his constituents at almost every turn? All signs point to the almighty dollar. While a sizable portion of national-level politicians begin their political careers with millions already in the bank, Rubio’s riches came only after he was elected to public office. Not only does the NRA provide him with an A+ rating, but they’ve also provided him with $3,303,355 over the course of his career. Additionally, since winning reelection in 2016, he has received hundreds of thousands of dollars from oil lobbyists. Every day, Senator Rubio intentionally works against the best interests of his constituents so that he can continue to line his pockets. Floridians deserve so much better than an egomaniacal tyrant that plays politics with their lives.
