It’s become more apparent that the GOP continues to attack the livelihood and safety of queer Americans nationwide. In this session alone, over 350 anti-trans bills have been introduced. Transgender people alone are 2.5 times as likely to be victims of violence as cisgender people facing higher rates of discrimination. We saw last year the talk of the Supreme Court gutting Same-sex marriage. The Biden administration acted fast to codify the Respect for Marriage Act, safeguarding the rights and protections of LGBTQ and interracial couples alongside their children. But currently, with the republicans winning the house, many of the GOP members are working towards erasing queer identities, leading to arrests and criminalization.
Listed below are some of the anti-LGBTQ Bills being introduced:
Georgia- SB88- Bans Trans students from changing gender markers without updated birth certificates.
Missouri-HB634- Don’t say gay bill
Iowa-SF348- Ban on the drag that would also lead to parents’ arrest.
Tennessee-HB09- It bans all public drag. This includes events such as pride. This would lead to a felony fine.
Oklahoma-SB129- Would ban all public funds from going to any organization that provides gender-affirming care, including to Trans adults.
And the list continues to add up. These being introduced erases queer youth from schools, making them prone to bullying and increasing mental health cases. Outside of the academic environment, queer adults would be faced with restrictions from health care providers and enabled harassment in the workplace without any legal protections. So, what do we do now?
