National Voter Registration Day and our Phone Event for Florida
Today, September 28th is an incredibly special day for us here at Rideshare2Vote. It is National Voter Registration Day! First observed in 2012, National Voter Registration Day takes place on the fourth Tuesday of each September. On this day each year, grassroots organizers across the country take to the streets with one thing on their mind: getting Americans registered to vote.
To date, around 4.5 million Americans have become a registered voters on this holiday. This is a pretty big deal in a country where 1 in 4 citizens are not registered, and voter suppression legislation is on the rise. It is so important that we take every opportunity to encourage people to make their voices heard and their votes count.
In addition to the everyday work that we do to put wheels under democracy, Rideshare2Vote will join forces with Equal Ground FL this evening in a celebratory phone bank. Equal Ground is a progressive, community-centered GOTV organization. They aim to educate the electorate on who and what is really on the ballot. Together, we will be reaching out to Orange County residents to encourage them to register to vote and, when the time comes, to use our services to do so.
Only about 66% of Florida’s population is registered to vote. In a state where registered democrats continue to outnumber registered republicans, increasing that overall number by any margin is likely to result in an increase in blue votes, something that Florida desperately needs. In statewide elections, republicans continue to win by razor-thin margins. In 2018, Senator Rick Scott beat out Democratic competitor Bill Nelson by just over 10,000 votes. In 2020, Donald Trump outperformed Joe Biden by 300,000 votes.
