Forty-Five Day Fighting Voter Suppression Initiative
Thanks to organizers’ hard work and dedication across the nation, Americans turned out in record numbers to cast their ballots in the 2020 election. Quickly deducing that widespread participation in democracy means that their party members are much less likely to emerge victorious, Republican legislators in over 45 different states have introduced voter suppression bills. This proposed legislation is so severe that newly elected senator Raphael Warnock accurately described them as “the new Jim Crow.” Under the guise of discouraging voter fraud (for which there is little to no evidence), these legislators are proposing bills that would ban ballot drop boxes, prohibit no excuse mail-in voting, decrease early voting days, and even make giving water to the voters punishable by a felony.
We all know what these measures are about: keeping disenfranchised, marginalized groups from the polls. The Rideshare2Vote team is committed to stopping voter suppression in its tracks. Over the next 45 days, in addition to our on-the-ground GOTV efforts in states across the country, we will be doing a deep dive into the past, present, and future of both voter suppression efforts and the ways that we can thwart them. Join us as we continue to put wheels under democracy by ensuring that every American has the opportunity to make their voice heard at the polls.
